The statistics are- The National Association of REALTORS 2007 study of Home Buyers and Sellers says that 10% of FSBOs sell themselves, another 10 % never sell (they may really not have been motivated or in financial trouble). Anyway, 80% will end up listing with an agent. So some do sell… and some decide its more trouble than they want to go through and list with an agent.
